IELTS
The International English Language Testing Service is an international examination body recognised by the governments of Britain, Australia and New Zealand. The medical profession and many universities world-wide require IELTS test scores for entry into the medical and nursing professions. IELTS is also recognised by entry to college and university courses. The four ten week terms outlined below may be taken separately as examination preparation.
VISA REQUIRED STUDENTS
Students may take twenty-five weeks tuition to form a complete academic year. This period of study is recognised for study visa purposes for Non-EU students ACELS Course Code 13.01. Students who hold study visas must attend a minimum of 85% of their course if they are to retain their study visas. Students who do not attend at this rate will be de-registered by the school.
I.E.L.T.S tests the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
SYLLABUS
The Core syllabus contains four units:
1. Reading comprehension skills development through working on a variety of texts based on authentic material from the sciences and social sciences.
2. Academic writing skills development – focusing on writing short reports, projects and analytical pieces. The material covered ranges over a very wide variety of topics and includes graphs, diagrams and drawings.
3. Listening and speaking skills development including conversation, interviews and listening comprehension based on taped material with a wide variety of topics and accents
4. IELTS Examination Preparation Lessons
These lessons prepare the students for their specific test so that the students understand the structure and function of the IELTS papers and are competent to undertake the examination.

F.C.E. course
First Certificate in English (F.C.E). By the end of the year intermediate level students should be able to acheive a pass in the Cambridge FCE examination. The FCE exam is widely recognised in commerce and industry in Britain and overseas as proof of language ability at the upper-intermediate level. It is the most widely taken of all the Cambridge EFL examinations with well over 250,000 candidates each year.
SYLLABUS
The Core syllabus contains four units:
- Preparation for the FCE examination.
- Reading a variety of texts based on authentic material such as novels and short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, guide books and informational materials, correspondence, messages and reports.
- Speaking and listening skills including general conversation, comprehension and exchange of personal and factual information, interpretation and expression of beliefs, opinions and ideas.
- Written communication including formal and informal letters, messages and reports.
C.A.E course
The Cambridge Advanced Examination (C.A.E). At the end of the year's work upper-intermediate students should be able to achieve a pass standard in the CAE. In practice this means that the students will be able to understand, read, write and speak English well enough to study or work in an English speaking country. The Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English is accepted as proof of English for university entrance in Ireland.
SYLLABUS
The Core syllabus contains four units:
- Preparation for the CAE.
- Twentieth Century English Literature with an emphasis on Irish writers of novels, short stories, poetry and drama.
- Oral communication - including conversation, making presentations and public speaking, listening skills and comprehension.
- Written communication - including letters, essays, reports and creative writing.
